“Honeydew’s staff consists of a lead teacher and assistant teachers. Our lead teachers have a Bachelor’s in Early Child Education and some of them already We have been incredibly pleased with the time our daughter has spent at Honeydew Drop. In fact, of all of the daycare situations our two children have been in, this experience has been the best. Carmen, the head teacher (who has been there for many, many years) is so warm, loving and attentive, and so enthusiastic about the children. She really knows each individual child and the parent/child conferences we have with her last more than a half hour. I learn so much more from Carmen than I ever do from my older daughter’s school teachers. Carmen makes sure that she is surrounded by a wonderful crew of support teachers, who are also loving and tuned into the children. We also really love Ruth, who brings an vivaciousness and humorous understanding of who your child is. The days are engaging, the specialty teachers (like music, dance, etc) are great, and my daughter has a wonderful time there. She has learned how to play so nicely with other kids, and I have picked up some great tricks from them (like encouraging “kind hands” instead of just telling a toddler not to hit or manhandle another child). They have a great outdoor back space and they also make good use of local parks and do fun activities like hatch butterflies and chicks.”

“The woman who runs Honeydew, Fabiola Santos, cares very much about the kind of curriculum and teachers she hires and she focuses on emotional and social development. She hosts parent meeting nights where she connects with parents about what the kids are learning and what is coming up. In addition, she has been incredibly flexible with us when it has come to last minute schedule changes. We have not one complaint from the year that our daughter spent at Honeydew, we only wish she was not aging out of this particular location!”

My daughter beginning at 13 months old was enrolled at Honeydew Daycare, and has absolutely thrived in their warm, nurturing environment.  The teachers are exceptionally kind and attentive. I was a bit anxious to go from a one-on-one home setting to a daycare setting, but it has proved to be the best choice for my daughter as she is a highly social person and very physically active.  At Honeydew she  is encouraged to reach and even exceed age-related standards for cognitive growth. They view children holistically, and  attend to their physical, intellectual, and emotional needs with equal consideration.  Honeydew provides an excellent routine and  structure for learning, playing and socializing. I am impressed with Honeydew’s curriculum and policies and recommend this organization highly.

We started our daughter at Honeydew Drop at 2 years old. She went from crying hysterically to running away from me when I dropped her off within just a few weeks.  She adores the teachers – she can’t blow enough kisses to Miss Ruth on her way out or say goodbye enough times to her new friends.  Constantly comes home talking about Miss Carmen and her friends, laughing and telling me all about her day.  Her vocabulary has grown quite a bit just in the first several months of attending, surely due in part to her experiences at Honeydew.  I can’t say enough positive things about the teachers and assistants.  They are so caring and loving and genuinely seem to love interacting and playing with the children.  So very happy that we found Honeydew!

“I have a very shy now 4 year old and she is very sensitive with people… We have been with Honeydew since January and it has definitely become her second home! The staff is caring and i never had any worries at all ever as I probably would worry at any other place but the teachers are really treating the children as they are their own. Also my daughters level of learning increased tremendously and we are looking forward to another great year! All Honeydews, staff and families are more so also like a one big family, I couldn’t have found a better place for my child!”

“My daughter has been attending Honeydew for several months. Overall, we are really happy with it. Her program is small, and it is ages 2-5. We like that the children are not grouped by age; that way they can learn from each other and be leaders for each other. I also feel that she gets a lot of personal attention. The school is run out of the basement of a brownstone, and while it’s not as fancy as some other preschools, it is well-equipped and the children have all the toys and books they need. I like the warmth of it. The teachers are all also very warm and greet my daughter by name every morning and help her get integrated with the other kids if she is feeling tentative. They make sure to have outdoor time every day, weather permitting. The school communicates frequently with parents and seems to work hard on social emotional development as well as ABCs, colors, numbers, etc. A lot of what they do during the day is flexible, determined by the children’s interests. Honeydew offers a lot of “extras” as well, such as social events and “Parents Night Out” where they babysit on one Friday evening per month. My only critique of Honeydew is that the communication can sometimes be a little disorganized (though it IS frequent and thorough) and could really use some help with messaging, proofreading, etc. But I really like everything else about Honeydew so we let that slide.”

“I just wrote my last check for my daughters daycare. She is going to Kindergarten in the fall. I thought this would be a good time to share my experience of my daughters time at her daycare: Honeydew. She started at age 11 months with two mornings a week, went full time at age 2, is graduating at age 4.5. She started at Kiddy Loft on Church Avenue, moved down to Playhouse on Church Avenue also, and spent the last few months at Safari on 14th Street, once we moved to Windsor terrace.I happened to meet one of the Honeydew teachers at my prenatal yoga class, so I learned a bit about it from an insider which was helpful and made me confident to send my daughter there. I realize that most young parents out there do not have that luxury, so I figured I can provide some feedback.Honeydew has been wonderful for a number of reasons. The pricing is reasonable. This was important for me back in the day when I had no job (I was laid off while pregnant) and was struggling to make ends meet. The schedule is super flexible. This was important to, as I was freelancing and needed lots of flexibility. Many options for drop-in, switching day, extending days at last minute’s notice etc. They also have a service called “Nanny in a Jiffy” so if your kid gets sick you e-mail them and they find a sitter at very short notice. Plus the sitter is one of the teachers so the child knows them already. So these two things were important to me in the beginning. However, what I learned to appreciate most about Honeydew is this: THE TEACHERS ARE ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL. Fabiola, the owner, has a real talent for finding and maintaining a fantastic staff. The teachers are like family and I want to hug them each time I see them. And so does my daughter. At this age nothing matters more but the love that the children receive from the teachers, and the sense of respect they learn for themselves and for others. There are a lot of “honeydoisms” that we adopted in our household. For example: “this is not a good idea” instead of “no”. Or “I need space” instead of “go away” or “i don’t like that” instead of screaming or yelling.I can go on and on. However, I do not want to turn this message into a novel, so if any of you have specific questions, please feel free to send me a private message and i will try to answer as best as i can.”
